PRECISION RIFLE 1 : Taught by Instructor William Thompson
INTRODUCTION: Precision Rifle I is a class that focuses of the fundamentals of precision rifle shooting. This class will be broken down into three major sections: (a) an indoor classroom period; (b) range day one; and (c) range day two.
Long gone are the days of gathering ballistic data by shooting in every condition possible. While shooters will confirm ballistic data in this class, on range day two, shooters will rely heavily on electronically driven ballistic data. The information collected during range day one will allow shooters to feed information into a ballistic engine in order to come up with quick ballistic solutions. Therefore, shooters must be prepared to do one of the following:
- Have a smart phone set up with a ballistic app for their rifle or have a Kestrel (Ballistic AE or Ballistic ARC recommended);
- After day one, go on the internet and use a ballistic engine to acquire their data (http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi ). Shooters must print or write this data down for range day two; or
- If a shooter has data cards specific to their rifle/ammunition combination, then they may use that information.
The pace for this curriculum will be fast. On day one, shooters will be provided with a packet that will serve as a roadmap for the class. Shooters must carry this packet with them throughout the duration of the class. Vehicles must be staged separately from the ranges, so shooters will have limited chances to return to their vehicles. Everything for the range portions of the class should be able to be carried by hand or in a backpack.
Required Equipment
- Rifle: BOLT ACTION rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy. Caliber must be between .223 cal. and 300 Win. Mag. (with velocities below 3,100fps). Rifle must be in safe operating condition.
